Team SNO: Yeah Ryan and Tommy!

Tag: Emailsadmin @ 12:13 pm

Paul broke the news already, but I had the update half written by then, so I’ll recount the news.

Oh wow, bittersweet is the perfect word for this weekend. Want the good news or bad news first? I’ll pick bad first, that way the good news comes last, ending the update on a high note.

Friday found allot of team members tooling around Sno getting some free skiing in. Our J4 fast guy Michael Griffin was heading from Phoebe lift to the lodge when he ka-dumpt it hard, breaking his collar bone. A quick trip to the bone doc fixed him up, but sadly, he’ll miss states. The other bad part is that he did this smack-dab in front of the ski patrol chalet. Why bad? Well, what sort of story can he tell his girlfriend now? Poaching a ride in the yet to be finished 22’ half pipe and breaking a bone is cool. Falling in front of ski patrol, not cool. It’s like auguring your car into the emergency room. Get well soon Mikey!

Sunday we needed to find a new slope to train on as Smoke received a fresh 6 inches of powder and GS training would have been dangerous. Coach Chris set a dandy course on ‘Far Charlie’ and it was working well… Well until Coach Dante endo’d in grand fashion in front of his 4-5’s crew. At first, the thought was he simply dingied his leggie and after a trip to the bar all would be healed. That changed when the X-Ray showed a crack. 3 hours later and cast on hoof, Dante hobbled into the bar saddened and numb. A showering of compassion and comfort from the Women of the Sno Ski team along with bountiful brews and goopy food brought light to his face and the cool sly smile we all come to appreciate. Or, it could have been the mixture of pain meds and booze. Get well soon Dante!

So that’s the bad. The good is we have not broken the string of Sno Mt. racers to make the trip to the highest level of Eastern J3 racing, J3 Junior Olympics! To recap, Mike Mitchell started it 3 years ago, followed by Brian Dunleavey and last year, Molly Curran. This year, none other than Tommy Steinbach upholds the tradition and heads to Waterville!! Interestingly, Tommy set yet another record for the year in that he’s the first FIRST year J3 to make JO’s out of the other three listed above! Guess he’s a shoe in for next year, making him the first Sno racer to go twice?!?! Don’t wanna jinx him, sorry ;-) Way to go Tommy!!

Not sure why I haven’t received a race report from J3 States, hopefully soon coaches?!

This weekend the 1-2s head to Elk for the final string of races that will complete the 8 race cup circuit. Wish ‘em luck!

Next weekend, our 4’s and 5’s take a crack at post season. I was wishing Mikey was going, I’ll be coaching J4 Future Stars at Okemo later next month and he would have been a shoe-in!

Also, please visit this website http://picasaweb.google.com/steinbach.bill

And see if your pic is in there. Coach Bill has been busy taking pictures with a camera that snaps 4-5 shots in a second, giving a great sequential flow to a turn. There’s allot to be learned by looking at yourself.

Out takes from the weekend:

Nothing funny, but mongo thanks to Coach Bob Griffin. He of course ran Mike to the hospital, but two days later ran Dante as well. I think his car knows the route there all by itself. Also thanks to bob for keeping his race and support crew well nourished and hydrated all weekend.

Gaetano and Steph were 25 minutes late getting the little grommets back to the lodge Saturday afternoon due to a broken Iron Horse lift. Brian Dunleavey paced angrily as he waited for little sister Claire. He was mumbling that he was going to be late for a big date because he was in charge of getting Claire de-booted and in the car. When the unsuspecting tyke shuffled across the flats, Brian ran out, grabbed Claire and tossed her over his shoulder and made for the steps to the parking lot, with skis and poles still attached. She was giggling the whole way, but it did sort of resemble a kidnapping. Brian got home in time, but was reportedly dumped that night so he ended up going to the mall with the boys.

Paul and the Stienbachs were in 7-Springs for states leaving a skeleton crew at Sno. I had a big idea of teasing Paul by planting phone messages to him that everything was ok now that the cops showed up. We apparently set two training courses on Lightning and closed it off to public. When public complained ski patrol came and then there was a big fight that involved paramedics and prison. Funny stuff, but Mark’s plow truck taking flight down Smoke was still funnier ;-)

Lastly, kudos to Ryan Symancek for placing his butt on the podium at a Northern ski race event. Details are fuzzy because I received the call from big Mark during the fiasco with broken bones and wasn’t able to recall places and times. But it was a third and that rocks!

That’s that! Good luck to 1-2’s and 4-5’s, get some good training in this weekend, you’re big show is next weekend!

Coach Rolf

Team SNO: Oh No! :-(

Tag: Emailsadmin @ 12:12 pm

Team Sno had a couple of unfortunate accidents this weekend.  First, on Friday, our veteran J4/5 racer, Michael Griffin, fell and broke his clavical.  Then on Sunday, Dante, one of our J4/5 coaches, broke his leg during ski team training.

Michael set a goal of making derbies this year and obtained that goal.  Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend.  He worked hard all season to reach this goal.  I know that he has to be extremely disappointed.  Michael was one of our seasoned competitors and only male qualifier for the 4/5’s derbies.  Dante, also worked hard this season, preparing our J4/5’s for competition.  He made sure that every racer was there to give it there best and had a true interest in making sure every racer had the oppurtunity to obtain their goals.  He was looking forward to being one of Sno Mtn’s coaches at the derbies.  After being a racer at many past derbies, this was going to be his first as a coach.

This weekend I will have get well cards for both and ask that all team members sign them.  I see Team Sno as a family, not a bunch of racers and parents that happen to use the same mtn every weekend to train.  Let’s get together and support our team members, Michael and Dante.  I would also like our 4/5 members, especially our derby qualifiers. to write a personal note to both Michael and Dante,  I think this would mean alot to them.  I am also asking Rolf to get a couple of cards for our 1/2’s to sign as they will be away racing at Elk this weekend.

Finally, I would like to set up a collection for Dante.  Many of you may not be aware of this, but last year Dante decided to switch careers.  He left his job as a proffesional Chef and returned to school to pursue a career as a physical therapist.  He depended on his income as a coach to help him through the winter.  His injury will prevent him from working well beyond the season.  I will have a ‘collection box’ for him this weekend.  It will be kept at the ski school desk.  I ask that the Team Sno family give what they can.

In advance I would like to thank the entire Team Sno family for their support of both Michael and Dante.  It is because we are a ‘family’ that we are the best team in the state!

TEAM SNO: Off to States!

Tag: Webmasteradmin @ 12:11 pm

Sorry for the delay in the update, my fingies are finally recovering from the chilly-willy Cup Race event at Ski Denton. Was it cold in Scranton too? Not sure what happened back at Sno, but I do know that we are nearing the finish line for the 07-08 season in a hurry!

Ski Denton was neat. Imagine a small ski area, hard to get to, small parking lot for perhaps a hundred cars at best, and registration/race prep inside the maintenance building. Grass roots racing to the fullest. Thankfully Denton was a bit short on snow and was not able to use the huge start platform they built at the top of the race slope. You think Smoke is steep? HA! Denton’s start is notably steeper, if you can imagine. Anyway, another record was set this weekend, more on that in a bit.

Molly kicked off the event with a hearty 11th place first run but came on REAL strong in the second, slamming home a 4th place run to total out for an 8th place result overall. That’s huge! Smoke training pays off I see! Peter got off to a rough start, klunking over and hiking once or twice. He put a good second run together but his first run was what drug him down to a 63rd place. Dan Cohen, now-a-days a real dark horse, also had a few faults and landed in 55th, with Marky-D a few ticks faster in in 48th. Brian had a great run going, right around top 10, but couldn’t back it up in the second. Patrick ran a conservative 34th, and Willy finished an impressive 25th. Flyin’ Ryan, now better known to his TV fans as ‘Big Dawg’, had little trouble dispatching his competition and landed safely and smartly in first place, by almost a full second. Niiiiice!!

Saturday evening found us back at the hotel enjoying the company of other ski teams, the pool and a night out on the town. With word of a truly miserable day ahead, we packed it in early (most of us ;-) and prepared for Sunday.

The day started off nice enough, brisk with plenty of Sun. By the time the race was over at 2:15pm, it was in the mid teens and wind huffing like mad! Molly once again lead things off, but was a bit depressed at a mediocre run. Truth be told, I was a bit disappointed as well. She was somewhere around 12th or 13th place. A lame pep talk on my part seemed to not help one bit (sooo sorry Molly!!). So what’s a Molly to do? Nothing…. Other than go out and kick butt in a way that made everyone recheck their start sheets for a name. Molly won the second run!! YUPS! She put one together, evening out to a cool 5th overall. Yeah Molly!!

Peter, though skiing better, still had a bit of trouble mastering the silly-steeps but took a well deserved 47th. Mark found a nice 32nd to his liking and Pat upping a few from yesterday with a 30th. Dan the man had a top 10 start but did a looptie-loo near the bottom and was suspected of straddling a bamboo. He says not, but I thought I detected a warble in his voice afterwards, so who knows. Willy continued to impress his coaches as well as the 1-2 scene and did not disappoint with a 23rd overall. Brian D really turned on the smoke today and scored an impressive top 10 result. He’s now mingling with the fast boys and is looking to begin the climb to the podium. Of course, Ryan will have to give up his spot if that’s to happen. Ryan won Saturday’s event by a second. Today, he felt a better spanking was in order and he clobbered the crowd by winning by nearly 2 seconds. What’s next Ryan, jeeez!

So did you catch the record? No? Well, for the first time in Sno/Montage history, we had a girl and boy win a run on the same run. No doubt, Molly is in the hunt. Could we see a boy girl first place overall soon? No pressure Molly.

Out takes:

#1 Ryan and Mark, comedian Geno Curran and I went out to a fancy restaurant, following a large crowd from Elk. Since they didn’t think to include us in their reservations (it was supposedly arranged earlier in the evening), we were left high and dry. Mark spun a tale of sorrow and a table magically appeared. While we were well into our first beer and salad, Elk was still waiting for their table. The kind and thoughtful waitress gave us a blank check to fill out with allot of expensive food and beverage, plus a huge tip. She played along and gave the bogus bill to Elk while we ran past her/them and waved ‘BYE’! She faked a startled look and for a short time, had Elk very concerned that this was going to be an expensive night.

#2 Denton has two Poma lifts. Always great to see and use them! Old School! No good stories this time around, but here’s an excerpt from an update dated 11/26/2003, post Killington Team Trip…

***Nicolette Pocious VS. Mr. Poma. Nic was having one heck of a time riding the cranky old Killington Poma lift that was in place decades before she was even born. First trip up, Mr. Poma chucks her off quite smartly. Second trip up, Poma snags her pole away. Finally, Miss Pocius said enough is enough. On her last trip up, near the end of the ride, Mr Poma tries to toss her again. Instead she hangs on and fights back. Tired and decrepit, the Poma stick coils begin to unravel (literally) and at the top disengages from the clamp shooting the stick and plastic platter (as they call it) skyward as if an arrow shot from a bow. With that, the cable flings itself cleanly off the pulley leaving us all stranded mid-pull, and eventually shutting down the lift for the rest of the day. We all stepped a little more carefully around Nic for the rest of the weekend.

Ahhh yes, good old days!

Mongo congrats to J3 racers Tommy, Evan, Michael and Cassidy for making the cut for J3 State Championships in Seven Springs thing weekend! Way to go 3’s!!

Also congrats to Ryan, Brian and Molly for making post season events. Consult Mark for details!

Good luck to the 3’s, makes us proud!

Coach Rolf

Revolution Tour

Tag: Emailsadmin @ 6:48 pm

On Thursday 2/28, Friday 2/29, Saturday 3/1 and Sunday 3/2 Sno Mtn is hosting the Revolution Tour.  This is a USSA/FIS level snowboard event that will draw competitors from all over the US and even international.  Sno Mtn will host the only event on the East Coast. The mtn is looking for help on Thursday and Friday, when the snowboarder cross will be held.  Thursday is a training day and Friday is the actual race.  There are many positions that need to be filled including course maintenance and gate keeping.  The boarder cross is a very interesting and entertaining event in that you have 4-6 competitors going at the same time.Anyone available to help or if you know someone please let me know.Paul Reed

TEAM SNO: J1-J2 at Denton

Tag: Emailsadmin @ 6:47 pm

Couple-a-things I forgot to mention in the weekly update… This concerns 1-2’s for Denton. A few things I remembered from the last trip out there……

#1 It may be smart to bring extra breakfast food. If I recall, there was a duncan donuts near the hotel and it gets packed in the morning with all the ski racers in town. Get there early or forget it. I think there was a fast food place in town, i don’t remember though.

#2 It’s a 45 minute drive to Denton in good weather. It’s all 2 lane road with some small towns along the way. Quaint little drive, I imagine it’s peachy on a nice sunny Autumn afternoon. But it’s a bugger with logging trucks and cops who WILL nail you for a few mph over the speed limit… right Mrs. Pocius?  ;-)

#3 Watch the weather before you go. I’m late for work so I would have done it for you. It’s a different climate out there and they were forecasting a bit of snow last time i looked.

#4 Denton does not have a large lodge or fancy apres ski sillyness. Come prepared to deal with hard to find seating and amenities. Tailgating is encouraged, the finish line is only a stones throw from the parking lot. Also bring sharp sharp skis. You’ve all seen the pictures, right?

#5 Oh, and the hotel is supposed to have a pool, don’t forget the suit!

That’s all i can think of, see you there!

Rolf
